Lab Operations
The Biological Defense
Laboratory is designed to meet client requirements in three specific areas:
Biological Environmental Testing, Bioanalytics, and Technical Support
Services. It is staffed and equipped to perform the rapid detection and
identification of low levels of a wide range of human pathogens, including
anthrax and many other biological agents; evaluation and field testing
of detectors for biological warfare agents; and development of novel technologies
for the rapid identification of biologics.
All BioLab operations
are performed in accordance with BSL-2/3 safety levels requirements prescribed
by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National
Institutes of Health. The BioLab is currently pending approval of its
application for participation in CDC's Select Agent Transfer (LR/SAT)
Program and for a SECRET level clearance.
Each BioLab staff
member knows and abides by all policies and procedures concerning safety,
security, fire, laboratory operations, and other applicable areas for
operation and maintenance of a BSL-2/3 facility. This means that the laboratory
is fully secure and controlled to handle highly hazardous materials up
to and including select biological agents. This level of security far
exceeds the safety and environmental requirements of most programs.
The Lab is fully staffed
and equipped with state-of-the art instrumentation including, but not
limited to: flow cytometers, spectrophotometers, fluorescence microscopes,
centrifuges, incubators, purification systems, gel electrophoresis systems,
biosafety cabinets and chemical hoods, 135°C freezers, thermocyclers
and other ancillary equipment.
