Meteorology
Artificial
Intelligence
GEOMET's meteorology
staff, in conjunction with our Artificial Intelligence (AI) Group, has
designed and developed several PC-based expert systems (ES) to aid weather
forecasters and planning personnel. GEOMET was an early leader in AI,
developing one of the first expert system decision aids for forecasting.
This system, developed in 1986, assisted weather personnel in the forecast
of low visibility due to fog. GEOMET has researched AI applications
in all areas of environmental sciences, water management and flood control,
hazardous waste investigations, and neural networking applications.
GEOMET's AI Group
is involved with all aspects of ES development, which include:
- Feasibility
and design studies
- Selection of
appropriate ES shell or programming language
- Knowledge acquisition
(literature reviews and personal interviews)
- Knowledge-base
representation (structure and code rules, and formalize database structure)
- User interface
design and development
- ES testing and
evaluation
- ES updates to
include new data or functionality
Our primary target
disciplines for ES-design and -development efforts have been environmental,
with recent emphasis on meteorology.
